The Influence of Mass Media News on the Attitudes towards People with Mental Difficulties

Parasocial contact has been examined in the context of attitudes towards ethnical minorities or in the context of sexual orientation. Similarly, the form of such contact has been examined. We conducted an experiment to examine if there is a similar influence on the attitudes towards people with mental difficulties. We also decided to examine the mediating effect of essentialism. Our results indicate the differences between the linguistic forms are small or none. The valence differences are also rather small. Possible reasons for these results are discussed in the Discussion.
